Neutral atomQuEra Computing
QuEra, founded by Harvard and MIT physicists, builds quantum computers from single rubidium atoms held in place by focused laser beams. Atoms can be moved around during a calculation, so any qubit can be brought next to any other. It offers an analog machine, Aquila, on Amazon's cloud and a gate-based machine, Gemini, installed on site in Japan. Much of its published work with academic partners focuses on error-corrected 'logical' qubits, and it now plans a fault-tolerant system called Libra for 2028.
Where it ranks this month
Best place in each race, from QubitBenchmark release 2026-11.1.
Machines
| Machine | Physical qubits | Introduced | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquila (analog) | 256 | 2022 | Amazon Braket |
| Gemini (gate-based) | 260 | 2025 | on-premises (first at AIST, Japan); hardware-level interface available on request |
| Libra (announced, fault-tolerant) | – | 2026 | not publicly available (planned for Amazon Braket in 2028) |

Promised vs delivered
What QuEra Computing has said it would build, and what happened.
| Milestone | Target | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Gen-1 error-corrected system: 10 logical qubits, >256 physical, transversal gates | 2024 | Slipped |
| Gen-2 system: 30 logical qubits, >3,000 physical, magic state distillation | 2025 | Slipped |
| Gen-3 system: 100 logical qubits, >10,000 physical | 2026 | Slipped |
| Libra: megaquop-class fault-tolerant system, >256 logical qubits, 1e-6 logical error rate, on Amazon Braket | 2028 | On track (company says) |
| Gigaquop-class system: >1,000 logical qubits, >20,000 physical, 1e-9 logical error rate | 2028-2029 (initial use at QuEra) | On track (company says) |
Recent claims, and how far the evidence has got
- Peer-reviewed First magic state distillation carried out entirely on logical (error-corrected) qubits, run on Gemini with distance-3 and distance-5 colour codes (with Harvard and MIT) Source
- Peer-reviewed Integrated fault-tolerant architecture on up to 448 neutral-atom qubits, operating below the error-correction threshold (Harvard-led, with MIT and QuEra) Source
